Basement Waterproofing – Items & Purposes

Materials used to waterproof basements can differ a lot in their forms and applications. The general public may be able to purchase some, while other will only be for professionals. Let’s check whatever the situation is and learn from it for your own home condition.

Simple sealants are the first materials for basement waterproofing that people are looking for. Their basement has previously had waterproofing done to it, so they are simply wanting to patch up some small damp portions. You need to treat the whole basement, walls and floor, otherwise it’s likely the water will simply find a way around the sealant. The product has a 20-year limited guarantee. Stitching materials can be used as an alternative option. These consist of metal staples which are literally stapled across the cracks, thus preventing or limiting further movement. Cement that doesn’t shrink is used to fill in the cracks.

Gunite (a form of concrete) can be sprayed on bigger cracks in basement walls or floors. The special spraying equipment that is required can be rented. The resulting spray will fill cracks and leave a smooth finish, but you need to get the mixture ratio right. Since it sticks to many different surfaces it makes for a great option.

It has to be mentioned that the key to basement waterproofing is not only the substance but its proper application as well. You must see to it that there is minimal water around the basement perimeter.

Also think about:

 

- keeping rain gutters in perfect repair.

 

 

- sloping the ground away from the foundation of the house

 

 

- when it is time for grass seeding, clear trees, foliage and flower beds from your home’s foundation

 

 

- patching cracks in the driveway.

 

 

- installing curtain drains to take surface water away from the house.

 

 

- installing dry wells for rainwater downspouts at least 10 ft. from the house.

 

 

- installing sump pumps.

 

 

- using interior gutters to collect water seeping through the basement walls and route it to a floor drain.
